Notes:   Formation (continued): clung to the tree's stump and its surrounding soil. The specially fertilized soil was very black with small white styro foam inclusions.
EXCAVATION NOTES:
The pit was sketched after being swept up and photographed; excavation commenced with the recovery of small pottery sherds, the severing of the final intact roots, the stump was cleaned around and then removed; small pottery sherds and tile fragments were found scattered but throughout.
After the tree stump's removal excavation in the planting pit continued; the excavator followed the cut of the planting pit while ceasing to work in the southern area and the uppermost NW area as they were outside the cut; in the area immediately around the remaining roots the excavator revealed small areas of yellowish white clay, the clay was part of a mix of soil and other matter that surrounded the orange tree sapling when it was put in the pit (the sapling came with its young root system surrounded by a mix of clay (to increase water retension), soil, and other matter all encased in a bag).
The excavator dug the clay as part of this basket.
