Description:   The soil color is light brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is well sorted. It is sandy clay.
Notes:   16.5.12 We decided to remove pier 573 because it seemed to be one of the latest pieces associated with some of the later fills in our trench. It is made up of large, irregular stones (limestone? and some worked marble). The pier was held together by a softy, sandy soil that was very soft to excavate.
The foundations for the pier go quite deeper than the surrounding context levels. Overall, we saved several pieces of marble sculptural fragments that will be washed with the pottery and examined in Pietri.
17.5.12 The foundations for the pier continue to go deeper. Foreman Thanasis is continuing to pull out large stones. He now appears to be below the bottom of the robbing trench in the north, which may explain why we thought the foundations for the pier had stopped.
