Context:   846

Date:   2012/05/18
Lot:   Lot 2012-046
Stratum:   20%: Pottery, tile, cobbles, pebbles, bone, glass, carbon.
Description:   The soil color is light brownish grey. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   This context is the removal of slightly harder soil than that removed in 837. It was identified within the area originally defined as 837 during the first pass across 837. To the N, it is bordered by a strip of harder soil that extends across the trench from Eto W. We are sieving 10%.
We have had to close this context due to rain. Excavation will continue here in session 3. Since G. Sanders has identified more sparkly ware in the pottery, we will be sieving 100%.
Session 3, 28 May 2012: Quantity of soil removed could not be estimated by buckets, as excavation started before we (R. McCleery and K. Mahoney) arrived today. At the bottom of this context, Panos found two distinct soils - one darker in the south, extending south to the baulk, and one in the north. The north context is whiter, and runs underneath the new context 849 which is a strip of blacker, cobbly soil that runs from east to west across much of the trench.
