Title:   Stony Black Fill in E-W Strip in N Side
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1106
Context:   849
Page:   0
Date:   2012/05/28
Lot:   Lot 2012-045
Stratum:   20%: Pottery, bone, tile, pebbles, cobbles, glass, iron, floor fragment (?), marble sculpture
Description:   Top slope of the context is uneven down to the N. The soil color is light greyish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   This is a strip of black soil with cobbles running E-W across much of the trench. The soil in the NE is fairly soft, circa 20% inclusions. To the W, there are more cobbles and the soil is slightly harder, coming out in small, hard chunks. Some rounded cobbles from W end of former stub wall 731-substructure? Started second bucket of pottery. Panos has found a very clear, sharp cut in the red-orange sloping soil revealed by 837. Part of this cut was visible after the removal of 837, but now there is a clear corner for it as well. The original cut runs slightly to the N from W-E. The cut can now be seen turning to the N on its E end. There is a nice line of stones appearing within this cut-wall? Also a piece of sculpted marble drapery. Some flakes of carbon appearing next to these stones at the bottom of this context. Panos cleaned the scarp thoroughly before we began this context. On the edge of the scarp, we have now found the S ege of a pit cut by the 1960s scarp (or simply half eroded down it). Several other new contexts are appearing on the bottom of 849 in the E. From N to S these are- one, a layer with tile and very loosely compacted soil; two, a denser layer with a whiter matrix; and three, a darker soil running south to the baulk (these last two were visible at the bottom of 846). Context left open at end of day; will continue tomorrow in area W of ''wall'' (soil immediately over wall is more red in color; the black soil we have been excavating before this context was laid on the red in a shallower layer over the wall than in the rest of the trench).
29 May 2012: Found glass base early this morning - rounded, bottom with a circular tab of glass on interior and center found near ''wall''. Iron nail recovered from just W of ''wall''. Deposit W of ''wall'' remains shallow but looser than above ''wall''. Two more large pieces of glass recovered - flat. Some chunks plaster. As pass proceeds W, nice clayey stratum being exposed - flat so far at S, sloping up slightly to N against triangle of early material last excavated as 836. Another flat piece of glass. Noticed carbon again in chunks of diameter ca. 1-2 cm. Continuing W several smaller shards of flat glass discovered. Noticed more, larger chunks of white plaster. The incline of the surface towards the N, previously quite visible, does not continue. More glass recovered, small shards both black (3) and transparent (5, 1 rim). More, larger fragments of plaster have been discovered in W portion of 849. Many more cobbles discovered near ''wall'' than in W end. Also, large piece (15 cm x 10 cm x 2 cm) of cement. Four more blackish pieces of glass. In W we reached a black and red layer which Panos says is something different. We will keep the two buckets of pottery separate when read in case the second has been contaminated. This continues as it was above on the E side of the ''wall'', but we are pausing to clean E of wall 746 before moving back to the area between new ''wall'' and wall 746. Took elevations on bottom because contours are very uneven. Bottom is clear and fairly even just W of the ''wall'' on the N side, but N of 616 the bottom became increasingly difficult to distinguish to both N and S. The S side of the context is stepped in small ledges as a result of searching for the bottom. These ledges thin out as the difference in elevations between 849 and surrounding contexts becomes less in moving W. Refer to written notes for sketch plan.
16 June 2012: This is a fragment of marble drapery preserving five curving, shallow, roughly parallel folds ~0.014 to 0.016 in width as well as four deeper, vertical folds ca. 0.005 in width separated by deep grooves into groups of two. Shallow curving folds suggest drapery tightly drawn across a sharp durve of the body - most likely hip, arm, or lower leg. Shallow folds are finely carved and polished on front surface, slightly more roughly finished on side, suggesting differential weathering and/or transition to back side of sculpture.
20 June 2012: Inventoried as S-2012-3.
