Description:   The soil color is light reddish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is moderately sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   This is an area of reddish soil E of wall 746 and S of wall 851. It sits in the SE corner of our area, so is bounded in the S by an arbitrary baulk. Its east edge is uneven from earlier excavation (the removal of 1930s backfill - see 634 from session 1). In the N, it is very soft and is cutting away cleanly from a level, clayey level surface, disturbed in places by ca. 1 cm diameter. In the S, we found a large diamond-shaped tile from a mosaic floor. On the S side, the surface beneath is slightly harder in places and slopes up from N to S. One large, flat piece of glass discovered near arbitrary baulk. Up against the baulk plaster or cement noticed. At a few centimeters down Panos says he has found a floor. Given the possible floor, general scarcity of finds, and esp. the fact that this context is truncated by the artificial baulk to the S, we think it best that this context be continued if excavation to the S and E takes place, as this would potentially help in elucidating this area. We have thus moved back to the W side of wall 746.
