Description:   The soil color is light reddish yellow. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   Having removed the boulder-laden contexts of 858 and 859, we excavated 860, as we continue to work on the high platform along the west scarp.

At the end of the day, Thanasis identified this context as a bothros due to the softness of the soil, and the round shape. It has continued about half a meter down this morning. Due to the narrowness of the western pedestalled area and the sharp drop on the side into pit 844, Guy just ordered us to temporarily stop excavation of 860 so that we can remove a balk-type area in between the robbing trench of 747 and 860. The workmen will cover 860 with a plastic tarp to prevent contamination, and we will focus on the south balk previously described (863) and 857 until they reach the same elevation as 860.
After lowering the elevations of the surrounding area, work in 860 resumed this afternoon. The soil color and composition remain the same as it is dug futher down. It is obvious that 860 cut into surrounding contexts on a N+ S South, such as 857 and 863. So we must assume that this feature is later than those surrounding it. 860 appears to be unaffected by 844 thus far, as there is a narrow balk-like feature (approx. 0.5-0.6 m) that separates the two. It looks like this balk might be the same as the blonde soil under 863, which probably covered a greater area in antiquity and was cut by 860.

The bothros was finished this morning. Thanasis stopped digging when he reached a hard-packed whitish layer with large tiles. It is unclear if this is the bottom or just another soil change. Interestingly, the N side of the bothros scarp is full of tile. A few large, unworked stones (possibly mined bedrock) are visible at the bottom on the E side.
Due to the small size of this western pedastalled area, we move to the E side of area once 860 is completed.
