Corinth Basket: Nezi Field, context 965 Collection: | | Corinth | Type: | | Basket | Name: | | Nezi Field, context 965 | Area: | | Nezi Field | Title: | | Compacted Soil, E of wall 540 | Category: | | Deposit | Notebook: | | 1107 | Context: | | 965 | Page: | | 0 | Date: | | 2013/04/01 | Stratum: | | Ceramics, glass, stones (small pebbles), tile | Description: | | The soil color is light brownish brown. The soil compaction is hard. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt. | Notes: | | At first, our pickmen were coming upon the same kinds of inclusions as context 964. The context is bounded by wall 807 to the north, wall 540 to the west and context 799 to the south. Eastern boundary was unclear when we began. We came upon tesserae, glass slag and either the rim or base of a glass vessel. On the south of wall 540, we came upon a soft cemented breccia. We continue following the compact deposit east, cut on the north by the pit C 430. we continue E to the point where the railway/plank bridge was laid this morning. Pieces of plaster with small pebble and glass inclusions found; sample kept. In the SE area, 20 cm W of 956, the neck of a black gloss closed vessel found (6th/5th cen BCE? H.G.). Deposit probably continues further E, but we began digging as a new context (968) due to possible contamination from Frankish pit 938 and placement of plankbridge this morning. We photographed possible postholes (quadrangular, darker soil?) in NW corner. Trowel test of W "hole" seems to indicate just a lens of darker sediment rather than a posthole. | Context Pottery: | | Fineware. Rom- AfRS, Unidentified. 1 bodysherd. spirally burnished; Fineware.
