Context:   299
Date:   2016/04/07
Stratum:   Some ceramic, modern glass and metal, small stones
Description:   The soil color is light reddish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is moderately sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   We open this context to excavate the extent of the foundation trench at the North boundary of the area. The soil is similar to that of context 295 -- that is, red-orange brown sandy silt. There is some cultural material, including ceramics and a few bones, but also modern material (glass, metal). We find a coin at the eastern end (2016-10). The excavated area includes both the actual foundation trench (ca. .1 m wide, with a slight expansion to the East as it rounds the corner block to meet with the East foundation trench) as well as some scraping and light digging of the fill to the south of the apparent trench itself (this area extends ca. .35-.45 m from the southern edge of the walls). We take final elevations to note this difference in extent. A chunk of floor cement (?) with regular pebble inclusions is also found in the fill in the eastern part of the trench. We stop excavating this context not because we have certainly reached the bottom in every area but because the narrowness of the foundation trench prevents further digging below (the bedrock, however, has been reached in at least most of the trench).
