We begin to remove the reddish rocky soil in the NW and SW corners of the room (info which cut 301 + deposit + 298 were dug). Based on photos from Broneer's excavations, this deposit was the filling in of a trench set along the western wall of the room, presumably to investigate the construction and foundation of the wall [south stoa volume, pl.27].
The presence of a metal can in the NW corner confirms the modern date of this deposit.
The Broneer fill covers a more compact reddish soil with gravel inclusions. This soil may be the same as what 310 is cut into on the eastern margin of the deposit. Throughout deposit 310, finds remain sparse--minimal pottery and bone, only a few finds (can, nail, piece of plaster).
In the corner of the walls in the NW corner, the bedrock is exposed. It is cut down/back to form a squared corner block underneath the toichobate course (cf. corner block connecting walls between Rooms 2/2R/3/3R). The bedrock appears to directly support the toichobate course of the north wall.
In the SW corner, the soil is the same loose reddish soil with many medium-sized stones and little cultural material. There is no overtly modern material in the fill (e.g. cans). There is still minimal pottery and bone. At approximately the same level as the bottom 310 in the NW corner, the deposit ends. At this level, there is a portion of an earth floor. This floor does not run all the way up to the western wall but was cut through slightly by Broneer.
