Corinth Basket: South Stoa, context 36
Collection:   Corinth
Type:   Basket
Name:   South Stoa, context 36
Area:   South Stoa
Context Type:   deposit
Title:   Fill over west side of NS robbing trench
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1109
Context:   36
Date:   2015/05/13
Stratum:   20% cobbles, some flecks of carbon, 15% tile
Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the E. The soil color is light yellowish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy clay.
Notes:   BTM elevation N = 81.39; S = 81.36
Characteristics: 36 is harder and has more tiles than 15.
This context is part of the large tile and cobble (aka rubble) fill below mosaic floor; the statumen probably. It was left in place when the room was sectioned E-W in order to access the well more quickly. We are revealing a part of it now in order to expose the area of soft soil running N-S from remaining N-S block wall on Shop VI's west wall.
It became difficult to find a clear cut in the soil, so we did a couple of tests to see how deep the same soil was and to explore where the cuts may be. We discovered the cut in a couple of areas, including along the edge of the N-S block. The cut seems linear, but irregular. The soil below the tile and cobble appears to continue below the western tile and cobble fill, currently left unexcavated. Also, it appears that the soil being excavated along the eastern edge of the context is similar to that of the western edge of 35.
NB: The type XVI and XVII lamp fragments come from the N end of the N-S wall.
Due to irregularity of the possible cuts for the foundation trench, 36 will be closed to open a new context, 37, which will hopefully reveal the extent of the cut.
