Stratum:   mostly medium and coarse pebbles, a few cobbles, rounded to angular spherical to tabular; some stones appear to be water worn; bone, sherds
Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the W. The soil color is dark brownish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is moderately sorted. It is silt.
Notes:   this rocky layer lay between two surfaces (536 and 538). It appears to be fill. It is the first layer of fill between surfaces that we have encountered in this trench; before now all our surfaces have been laid on each other. In this respect our surfaces are quite different from the three surfaces we excavated in 1R (388, 442, 500), between which lay several layers that we interpreted as colluvium. Walter Grauss yesterday looked at the scarp in 301, however, and doubted that we had colluvuium in this trench at all-- he said that he would expect more homogeneity in colluvium. The edges of our pottery and stones have been mostly angularand sharp, whereas if they were deposited by water action one would expect them to be smoother. Walter suggested that in 1R we have a single dumping action., and that the surfaces were formed when the fill was trampled down.
In this context we found a round stone (MF-2016-22) with a flat, apparently broken surface, which may be marked by tools. We have found several such stones in these prehistoric contexts.
This context was much thinner in the east.
We think that this context may be leveling fill for a significant remodeling of the surface, hence the very little overlap between 536 and 538.
