Name:   South Stoa, context 538
Area:   South Stoa
Context Type:   deposit
Title:   7th Lens of Hard Compact Clay Surface
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1110
Context:   538
Date:   2016/05/18
Lot:   NB1110 B538
Stratum:   bone, sherds, small pieces of vrachos; mostly subrounded to angular, a few rounded spherical to tabular fine to coarse pebbles, some cobbles (more towards the bottom), lime
Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the W. The soil color is dark brownish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   this was the first new context opened 18/5. it covered the entirety of our trench. Unlike most of our previous surfaces, it was barely in contact with the surface above (536). We believe that537 is a leveling fill representing a significant remodeling of the surface, with 536 then laid as a new surface.
In this context we found part of a vessel standing upright (its foot was preserved) apparently on the context below 538. removal of 538 in this area revealed in the NW corner another surface with many sherds trampled in as well as some bone; many more small pieces of vrachos than in 538 were also visible in this surface. Now that we can see more clearly that this context is a surface, we know that the vessel was resting on it. We think that the vessel belongs to the same action as 538, however: the vessel was broken, and we didn't find the rest of it. Most likely it was laid down with 538 already broken and happened to fall on its base.
We look forward to seeing the full extent of the newly revealed surface. It is redder and lighter than 538.
we moved our first flotation sample from this context slightly east upon discovery of a jaw. The coordinates are therefore estimated.
We can now see a layer of fill with cobbles which lies over the new redder surface revealed earlier. In the scarp of 301, this fill appears thicker in the south, thinning to the north as it runs over the red surface. That surface appears to continue to slump down toward the center of the trench, where it ends.
Further excavation showed that these cobbles are actually part of 538. this context is quite thick and cobbly in its south corner. In general this surface has been the cobbliest of our surfaces. It may actually be laid directly on the next surface with no cobbles intervening. According to panos these cobbles are in fact fill between the two surfaces.
536 and 537 appear to have the same relationship as the surface and fill of 538: surface and fill below, respectively. We excavated 536 and 537 separately mainly because of the inclusion in the latter of many more cobbles and a soil change. The surface and fill of 538 had the same soil; the surface had some cobbles, so we didn't notice the difference between the deposits immediately. The boundary is diffuse, so we cannot determine the division between surface and fill clearly. The surface was likely not as compated as our previous surfaces, which were clearly distinguished from their associated fills.
28/5/2016 we currently interpret this surface as one lens of an EH metaled road.
