Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light greyish brown. The soil compaction is very soft. The soil is moderately sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   this deposit had been exposed for quite some time (since the removal of 515), so it was quite parched, hence very light and impossible to mold (deprived of moisture). Since it became visible, we have thought it was a surface, either running under 497 and used by the builders of the that cut as the next best bottom when they failed to hit bedrock, or laid by those builders for the same purpose. Removal of the context showed that it was not a surface-- too sandy, insufficiently compact, no sherds trampled flat-- but laid over a surface (with which we had conflated 541), that appers to cover much of the trench. 541 does run under 497, and contained LN and EH sherds, so we interpret it as another layer of fill associated with the series of surfaces.
Upon taking drawing points for this context, we realized that the master plan we had been using this entire session was slightly inaccurate, in that the ledge formed by the excavation of the foundation trench (506) was too far east, and much straighter than it really is. This wasbecause the plan followed the line of that trench at its highest point, and the trench narrows towards its bottom. Fortunately, this error does not affect anyof the contexts we have excavated. The plan has been emended and shouold be accurate from this drawing of this context onwards.
