Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1110
Context:   543
Date:   2016/05/20
Lot:   Context 543
Stratum:   sherds, bone, dark grey clay; mostly medium to coarse pebbles (a few fine pebbles and cobbles) subrounded to angular (a few rounded) spherical to tabular
Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the E. The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is moderately sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   this context was quite compacted, but its compaction may be the result of our treading upon it.
This was the last deposit to remove before we revealed the full extent of the 9th surface. It was much rockier but otherwise similar in soil to 540. wethink that they are both leveling fills associated with 538. the amount of fill below 538 suggests that it represents a significant renovation of the surface (unlike 542, which seemsto be a small repair).
There is actually on more layer of fill besides 543 obscuring the full extent of the 9th lens of the sufrace, in the NW corner. Previously we had thought that this fill was part of the 9th lens, but it does notresemble the reddish surface.
