Stratum:   several large pieces of vrachos; fine to coarse rounded to angular spherical to tabular pebbles, some cobbles, bone, a few sherds (one quite large), mudbrick
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light brownish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   we excavated this context after 543 because the last context of fill over the 9th lens of the surface was at risk of contamination by the fill of the foundation trench if we excavated it next.
Like other deposits in the foundation trench for wall 459, 544 contained pieces of mudbrick. Panos thinks that they are vrachos. We brought them to the museum to determine for sure.
We left a martyra between 544 and 301 lest material from the trench fall into the pit, and removed it at the end.
We attribute the difference in shade and malleability between 544 and 511 to exposure-- 544 had been exposed and lost moisture for quite some time before excavation. It was less desiccated than our other exposed contexts because it was in a shady spot of the trench and underground. The two contexts may contain slightly different soil, however (hence the difference in hue and sandiness)-- the fill of the foundation trench generally was quite mixed.
