Stratum:   carbon, bone, fine to coarse subrounded to angular spherical to tabular pebbles, a couple cobbles
Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the E. The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is moderately sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   we have been calling this the ninth lens of our series of surfaces, but in fact it may be a different surface altogether. It is quite different in character-- it is sandy (the others are clayey) and fairly barren (the others had sherds trampled in and other inclusions like rocks, bone)-- and separated from the other surfaces by quite a bit of fill. Perhaps the area was significantly renovated into a new surface after 551 had fallen out of use.
This context is the portion of the surface in the NW corner. The surface covering the rest of the trench to the east of the bothros appears to be the same surface, but we excavated them as separate contexts because they do not touch (the bothros separates them). We will excavate the eastern portion of the surface next session.
