Type:   Basket
Name:   South Stoa, context 564
Area:   South Stoa
Title:   Rocky layer under snails deposit
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1110
Context:   564
Date:   2016/05/31
Lot:   Lot 2016-052
Stratum:   30% angular, spherical and tabular coarse pebbles, occasionally spherical rounded pebbles. Snails present but not in the proportion of 558. Few sherds.
Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the E. The soil color is dark yellowish brown. The soil compaction is weakly cemented. The soil is moderately sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   13.31: First record of the context, the area was left ready for photogrametry and excavation first thing in the morning.
1st of June, 2016
08.00: After photogrametric record and the drawing of the top plan work started in the deposit. Excavation took place again from SE to NW along the line of the section, taking advantage of the clearer cuts.
08.15: After finishing this pass I shifted to work towards NE taking advantage of the cur created. Soil is loose and stones are easily removed once the soil around them is partially removed.
9.27: Record of soil characteristics. The layer is more leveled now and the NE edge starts to become visible. Rather than a vertical lcut it looks more like a gentle slope towards the SW. I will resume work SE to NW along the edge and then move again NE. The presence of coarse pebbles is less significant in the lower levels of the deposit but the soil presents the same characteristics and it is still significantly different from the face of the cuts.
11.29: After finishing the pass described in the last paragraph I decided to change context number. Stones practically dissapear from the surface revealing a more compact surface still distinguishable from the cut. Since these rocks were the defining element of the deposit I decided to stop and open a new context. Finally, it is also important to notice that the gentle slope visible on the NE end was only the combination of the rocks and soil compared by training during the works of the last session. Once a crust of soil <0.050 was removed the same deposit was revealed.
