Stratum:   sandy and clayey silt. Pottery, bone, a few cobbles throughout, fine to coarse spherical to tabular subrounded to angular (plus a few rounded) pebbles, lime (a bit)
Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the W. The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is moderately sorted. It is mixed- see description.
Notes:   We excavated this context, which appeasr to be a layer of fill for the road (not a surface--it has stones sticking out not quite flat through the top) next because we are not yet sure whether the rocks composing the western edge of the road run up to or under it, and we want to avoid contamination.
This context and the road surface to the west appear to be the last contexts cut by bothros 548. They follow its line just slightly; 566 runs under it.
This layer was much less rocky towards the west than it was toward the east (under the bothros).
A clearly historic sherd was found in the scarp of 507; panos removed it just from the edge of the deposit. We are considering it contamination from the foundation trench fill (544).
Removal of this context revealed that the rocks from the road did not in fact run under 566. 566 does run under a different rocky deposit--of fill, with rocks poking through the top--that we initially thought might be part of the road.
