Type:   Basket
Name:   South Stoa, context 568
Area:   South Stoa
Title:   Compact layer under rocky deposit
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1110
Context:   568
Date:   2016/06/01
Lot:   Lot 2016-052
Stratum:   15% coarse pebbles, mostly spherical rounded and sub-rounded. Barely any antropic element.
Description:   Top slope of the context is uneven. The soil color is dark yellowish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is moderately sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   12.18: Excavation started in the context following again the patterns recorded for the following deposits. The only difference was the use of a handpick due to the compaction of the soil and the absence of stones.
13.49: Work ended for the day. The deposit continues so work will be resumed tomorrow.
2nd of June, 2016
07.39: Work resumed in the area. Excavation proceeded as described yesterday, using mainly handpicks to remove the deposit.
08.43: More of the bedrock face NW of the cut is visible. Its surface is very irregular, and it is becoming more and more difficult to work the deposit. Now I will shift and work SW to NE, from the line backwards, since it is the only way to fit the handpick. Then I will fix the faces of the cut with the trowel.
11.35: Excavation revealed another concentration of stones. Despite the soil is still exactly the same I decided to close the deposit and start a new record for two reasons: 1) To be coherent with the other decisions I have encountered before in the pit; 2) To avoid missing the bottom of the cut due to the difficulties generated during excavation. The NW face of the cut that corresponds to the palaeobeach bedrock presents a series of irregular holes that correspond to the erosive effects of water. This indicates that this face of the cut was not worked as the others, and the soil of this deposit gets into these holes making very difficult to excavate. The SE face of the cut presents other problems, mainly that the deposit seems to run a little bit inside the cut rather than vertical, making tge excavation of this side also very delicate. This deposit and 572 belong to the same antropic action of filling the cut, and they both were formed almost simultaneously, but due to its internal characteristics must be recorded as two separate contexts. From this deposit 29 liters (2 buckets and 1/2) were removed.
