Title:   5th Lens of Very Hard Sandy Surface
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1110
Context:   571
Date:   2016/06/02
Stratum:   bone, pottery, fine to coarse (mostly coarse) rounded to angular spherical to tabular pebbles
Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the W. The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is moderately sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   this context was the next lens of our very hard sandy surface (possibly a road). A softer strip of it was visible before excavation of 570 (which lay over most of 571), running along the cut in the bedrock to the south. Panos explained that the road would naturally be much harder towards the center, where people would walk, and softer closer to the bedrock, where people would not walk.
Below the northern corner of the triangle (the rough shape of this context) was a flat patch of bedrock, apparently anthropogenic. We suspect that this patch indicates that we have reached the bottom of the road.
Below this context lay a layer of rocky fill (573) in what seems to be quite a large cutting in the bedrock. A thin strip of soil (574) is laid over the edge of the cut.
