Corinth Basket: South Stoa, context 595
Collection:   Corinth
Type:   Basket
Name:   South Stoa, context 595
Area:   South Stoa
Title:   Compact layer E of 2R
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1110
Context:   595
Date:   2016/06/15
Lot:   NB1110 B595
Stratum:   65% inclusions, spherical rounded and subrounded coarse pebbles and cobbles. Large fragments of pottery. Very scarce bones.
Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the NW. The soil color is light yellowish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is very poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   09.05: After debating with Sanders and Smotherman about the steps to follow it was decided to proceed with the excavation of this deposit. Since the sequence of the area was broken due to the sectioning of the room and the risk of collapse of part of the foundation trench of wall 459, now we face the problem of this deposit going below the deposits of the foundation trench. Of the options proposed I have decided to leave a martyr when necessary to avoid the Hellenistic deposits to contaminate the area. Also to avoid this problem I will excavate from the face of the Cut 593 to the edges, to be sure that the contamination mentioned beforehand does not take place.
11.05: Work continues on the context, which looks more homogeneous after the first pass. The removal of the first pass made me wonder whether this was a single deposit or if there was another differentiated below. Careful study of the soils and inclusions indicate that the visible surface under the first pass is the same, and that the slight differences are just the result of the surface exposed to trampling and slight differences in humidity.
13.00: Stratigraphy of the area gets complicated again by the appearance of another soil that does not correspond to the reddish soil by the bedrock nor another rocky layer to the E of the area. This deposit is characterised by a softer soil and much less stones than 595. A cleaning is still necessary to assess the boundaries, but it is important also to start considering how to transition to the Hellenistic deposits. The plastics who have helped to collect the soil are now hiding the stratigraphic relationships, so thet will be removed tomorrow.
14th of June, 2016:
07.52: After extensive cleaning and definition of the boundaries the excavation of the context was closed. There are three visible layers right now, by order of excavation, a rocky fill of yellow soil in the corner of the room, the natural deposit already described by the bedrock and, finally, a small stony deposit between them and sectioned by the foundation trench of 459. Both rocky deposits show ceramic material from the EH II period. Due to their reduced dimensions and the need of leaving martyrs to avoid the contamination of the deposits its being debated the necessity of excavating them. Four buckets (64 liters) removed.
