Collection:   Corinth
Type:   Basket
Name:   Temple E, Southeast, context 1085
Area:   Temple E, Southeast
Title:   Packed gravel floor, NE unpaved courtyard, unit 1
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1112
Context:   1085
Date:   2017/5/4
Lot:   Context 1085
Stratum:   Coarse sand with lime, fine rounded pebbles (10%), shells, ceramics, charcoal (< 5mm)
Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the E. The soil color is light yellowish brown. The soil compaction is weakly cemented. The soil is well sorted. It is coarse sand.
Notes:   1085 seems to continue under paved stone courtyard. Therefore, the southern boundary of 1085 is artificial, as the excavation during the 2017 season will not go under the paved courtyard. Based on inclusions, layer could be cement. It may be from a marine deposit or from the local shelly oolithic limestone. Two, possibly three distinct cement floor layers are visible under 1085. Excavation has slowed to diligence neede in ensuring earlier layers are not brought up with 1085. G. Sanders identified lime in composition of floor, which would have made the floor more resistant to wear and water. Early on 05/05/17, three bronze items were recovered in quick succession, approx. in the center of the excavation area (a bronze penis from a statue, a bronze spindle hook, and a bronze coin). Other artifacts include courseware, glass, and bone. Western boundary is artificial due to scarp from session 1 2017 excavation edge. Due to presence of lime in floor and hardness, it may have been suitable for outdoor use. So far, the function of this floor and area is unknown. Perhaps at first, before the southern portion of the courtyard was paved with the stone paving stones, this space in the north was an outdoor area (hence the concrete). Once the courtyard was paved, the space in the north may have become a covered space (perhaps by an awning, or a simple roof). This may explain the upper clay and earthen floor surfaces, which would have been very muddy and messy in the rain. The eastern boundary is artificial due to interference by modern wall reconstruction. After 1085 was removed and the lower floor surfaces were revealed, attention was moved to the eastern section of unit 1, where the excavaton of pit 1078 was continued.
