Title:   Ash deposit in E section unpaved courtyard, unit 1
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1112
Context:   1102
Date:   2017/15/15
Lot:   Lot 2017-005
Stratum:   Soil is more accurately described as "ashy silt". 30% ash, 10% charcoal (1 cm), 2% tile fragments (3-5cm), 3% rocks.
Description:   The soil color is dark greyish black. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silt.
Notes:   The boundaries of 1102 were defined by as follows: in the south, by the edges of the paved courtyard (though the floor can be observed continuing under paving stones); in the north, by the north wall foundation trench (1084); in east, by a scarp (it had been decided bisect the unpaved courtyard and excavate an area spanning 2m from the west scarp); and in the west, by the west edge of the scarp. Since on the east unexcavated side the continuation of deposit 1102 has not been excavated, it is not possible to assess if context 1102 was cut by pit 1078. This floor may be a part of a prepatory subfloor - it may be possible the ash in the subfloor was laid down while still hot in order to make the clay in the upper floor surface more durable, though this is entirely theoretical.
