Title:   Cut for grave 2014-03 in church
Notebook:   1108
Context:   126
Date:   2014/04/22
Description:   The context shape in plan is oval. The top break of the cut is sharp. The sides of the cut are vertical. The break at the base of the cut is gradual. The base of the cut is flat.
Notes:   Context 126 is the cut for grave 2014-03, filled by context 112 and associated with skeleton 127. The surface of this cut was traced by Thanasis while removing the fill from this area (context 105), since the soil in fill 112 was softer. Work proceeded by small pick in passes of 8-10cm. The break of the slope at the top of the cut is sharp and the sides vertical, so the cut was easily ecavated until skeleton 127 was exposed, measured, and drawn, and then removed. The flat base of the cut was then defined by Tasos using a trowel on 24-4-14 when fill 112 was closed. This cut appears to have been made specifically for this burial, since both the cut and skeleton 127 are fairly large and placed between the pier bases. Because grave 2014-03 was covered by the fallen columns moved to the side of the excavation area before we began work this season, it is possible that at least the W column was intentionally placed over this burial.
Note: a stepped ledge was reserved to the SW of this cut to provide access to the grave and does not reflect the original contours of the cut.
