Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark greyish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is very poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   the deposit 144 and its associated cut, 145, cut into the surface revealed by 117, so we are taking it before we go on with our sectioning of the courtyard area. There is a concentration of bone here and it's deeper than we expected. We suspect that the S drain post-dates this fill, as the drain was dug in. There was no evidence of a cut for the drain, which may mean that they laid the stones against the sides of a cut rather than digging a complete foundation trench and building the walls of the drain within it. There would have needed to be a wider cut for the capstones, but this would have been taken out in the previous excavations when the capstones were removed. This is where the cut for the drain belongs in the Harris Matrix. The extent of the pit is unknown. The currently excavated portion is truncated by the martyr we have along our south wall, which we are not removing because of the extensive gravel deposit associated with the modern reconstruction. Near the bottom of the fill the soil gets darker. We've revealed a hard packed surface with fewer inclusions and parts of two pits cut into it; one at the NW edge, where our pit butts up against the stones of the drain, and one at the east end, where our cut, 145, narrows. We close 144/145 and go on to section the courtyard.
