Stratum:   6% Snails. Very few roof tiles and other ceramics. See notes.
Description:   Top slope of the context is steep down to the SE. The soil color is dark brownish red. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is very poorly sorted. It is clay.
Notes:   We are excavating this context because the layer of brownish clay with rubble inclusions uncovered by the excavation of 131 seems to run under the current context. Inclusions are primarily ceramic roof tiles, with some small pieces of fineware. There are also some bone fragments and a piece of unpainted plase. There is a significant number of snails embedded in the dirt. As we dig further down, the dirt becomes somewhat less compact. There are also fewer inclusions as we move east. The dirt comes out in larger clumps, and when crushed in the hand, yield a large number of very small (0.02-0.04m) snails, in addition to the larger land snails that permeate the fill. ON the western side of the fill we sieved 30 buckets 100%, and found very little pottery (85 fragments of pottery), primarily very broken coarseware, as well as 1 bronze nail, and a small fragment of glass. We stopped sieving until we came to the eastern side, where we sieved 50%. Out goal is to determine how sterile this red layer is, so that we can figure out how it was deposited. The 50% sieve after 20 buckets of material, yielded one fragment of pottery and two bones - consequently, we stopped sieving entirely. More of the residue of the lime pit was found on the north limit of the excavation. Excavation was stopped after the red dirt had been removed and the space between the stones swept out as much as possible. There are plans to remove the rubble after we make sure that no higher interfaces are superimposed on it. The remaining lime is also being removed; botht the foundation for the lime pit and the scarp to the north can potentially contaminate the rubble pile.
