Title:   Soft Pit with Chunky Tiles N of Unit 2 Room F
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1108
Context:   39
Date:   2014/04/10
Stratum:   10% inclusions of ceramic, bones, fine pebbles and cobbles.
Description:   The soil color is light greyish brown. The soil compaction is very soft. The soil is very poorly sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   A lens was excavated at about the center of the baulk. On the southern edge, the extermely loose soil marked it as a later deposit. A soft brush was needed in the intial cleaning, since the regular broom was removing too much material. The soil that is coming out of the pit is extremely loose. The pit also seems to run up to the edge of the scarp, suggesting perhaps that some of the patch has already been lost to earlier excavation. 0.05m in from the edge of the baulk, the soil becomes darker, and less clumped, but also less dry. The edge of the lens is defined by a more clayey dirt. A coin came out of the SE corner. As the pit extends deeper, the soil becomes more moist, and starts to feel clayey in places. We come down on the floor of the pit first on the east side, aprroximately under the find spot of the coin. Excavation was stopped when we came down on a redish clay on the west side of the pit, which was determined to extend over the floor of the pit. The underlying surface was noticeably harder and inset with a number of cobbles and large pebbles. We notice a greater number of inclusions of ceramics and stones on the western end but halt excavations in order to explore the are north of the pit to help us better determine the relationship of the two soils. Research in NB 869 yielded little. Earlier excavations may have missed this pit. B 38 passes this elevation with no mention.
