Title:   Cut of pit in NW corner of church
Notebook:   1108
Context:   44
Date:   2014/04/10
Description:   The context shape in plan is oval. The top break of the cut is gradual. The sides of the cut are convex. The break at the base of the cut is gradual. The base of the cut is sloping. Truncation: cut by robbing trench for N wall of church.
Notes:   Context 44 is a cut for a pit in the NW corner of the church nave filleed by deposit 32, a mixed deposit with different soil compositions and inclusions. The pit was observed in the S scarp for the robbing trench of the N wall of the church (context 2), but in spite of the concentration of bones observed the cut for this pit was difficult to discern, especially in the lower levels. Work ceased when the cut was no longer traceable to the N or W. This may be the result of prolonged exposure of the scarp since previous excavation in this area in 1990 (see NB 831 + NB 835), resulting in heavy erosion and distrubance by bioturbation. The lowest levels of this cut are therefore arbitrary and based on the decision of the excavator and field director to suspend work until the surrounding area can be excavations. While it is difficult to determine the function of this cut, since its boundaries are diffuse and the fill mixed and highly disturbed, the irregular shape may point to an erosional event or perhaps an animal burrow. Alternatively, this pit may be related to the robbing activity of the N wall that it abuts.
Later notes: Review of the previous work here (NB 835, Basket 53, pp.97-8) shows that a pit was partially excavated here but the basket closed when human remains were found. This may account for the irregular shape of the cut and its mixed fill, since it is a burial pit disturbed by robbing activity in the N wall, erosion, and previous excavation.
