Description:   Top slope of the context is uneven. The soil color is dark brownish red. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is well sorted. It is clayey sand.
Notes:   Coin # 97 (sieve) - French, Louis VIII or IX
688 had a very similar fill to context 685, but was cut by post hole (689) that was removed with 685 but did not cut 685, indicating that 685 and 688 were separate filling events, even if they are later equated. The surface of context 688 was a firm layer that could be felt with the trowel. It is possible the context was exposed for some time before 685 was deposited on top of it, both of which seem to fill a shallow dip. Coin 97 was found in the sieve and dates to early to mid 13th century.
