Title:   Fill of S Inhumation of Grave 2016-05
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1110
Context:   973
Date:   2016/05/19
Stratum:   This soil included fine and medium pebbles (rounded, sub angular mostly), pottery, and bone (both human and animal).
Description:   The soil color is dark yellowish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is moderately sorted. It is silty clay.
Notes:   As we finished excavating skeleton 970 we came down on the lefts side of another inhmation to the south. Kostos believes that the cut 968 continues south and includes this inhumation. One of the nails in the SE corner pointed south, indicating it went into another coffin south of coffin 972. The skull of the burial is close to the top of the fill. This inhumation (S side) is directly next to wall 929 (south wall) of the church. The wall likely served as the south side of the burial cut. The lime moretar or plaster explsed in 957 is directly on top of the inhumation. The coffins of skeleton 970 and the south inhumation (skeleton 974) would have been so close to have been touching sides in the burial. Right now it seems tha the two individuals were buried at the same time, side by side. Why not center the large grave in the spzce? Was it easier to use this S wall as part of the burial?
Some of thenails associated with coffin 972 may have belonged to a coffin containing inhumation 974. An iron nail going sideways to the north was found in the SE corner of the the burial. Another nail sticking straight up was found along the south side along the wall.
Context exhibits same root abundance as 966. Human bone likely associated with Skeleton 974 was separated in a bag (labeled) and placed with skeleton 974.
