Notes:   Later notes:
This context was excavated to clean and better define what is happening in the NW corner of the church. The area had been previously explored in the 1990 field season (NB835, Basket 53, pp. 97) and in the 2014 fields season (contexts 32, 44, 529). The 1990 excavation context was to explore the corner where they discovered the top of the pit and began excavating it. They found that the upper fill was composed of stones and tiles, but after these were excavated, human bone began to appear. At this point they closed the context. The 2014 season also explored the corner. Context 529 was an exploratory pass to understand the edges of a pit (cut 44, fill 32) that had been discovered from observing the scarp of the robbing trench over Wall 20. Having exposed more human skeletal material within the pit, the excavators decided not to continue the context as they believed it might reveal an osteotheke based on the quantity of material. Their exploratory efforts left a small portion of fill from the layer the contexts cut into. It is this layer of fill that this context represents. The cleaning of this context and the area within the cut revealed an articulated spinal column in the middle of the pit. There were a number of disarticulated human skeletal remains recovered as well.
