Title:   Fill of South Aisle
Category:   Deposit

Context:   983
Date:   2016/05/31
Stratum:   Fine sub-angular and angular pebbles, medium and coarse angular and spherical, tabular and platy; cobbles sub-angular spherical; pottery, bone, ceramic and stone tile fragments
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light yellowish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   This is a fill layer spanning about 2/3rds of the south aisle in the church. Grave 2016-05 cut into this lyaer (Cut 968). The context is marked by an apparent cut mark on the north and west sides. The fill was quite poorly sourted with many tabular pebbles and cobbles as well as stone and ceramic tile fragments.
Coin 147 found in sieve.
Coin 148 found in sieve.
A medium sized (ca. 0.15m long) marble tile fragment was found which mahy indicate a floor above this level.
Coin 149 found in sieve.
Coin 150 found in sieve.
Removal of this fill exposed on pebble-y layer in the east end of the context, around cut 968 for Grave 2016-05. Suprisingly little bone was retrieved from the eastern half of the context. Only some animal bones and fewer human bones. A human femoral midshaft fragment was found in the western half of the context. The human bone coming out are large fragments or complete smaller elements such as vertebrae or the distal end of a tibia.
Coin 151 found in sieve.
Medium sized rock and tile fragments and possibly some plaster (not plaster, but poorly fired tile) expoed on west side at the north edge of the context. A few white, possibly plaster or concrete(?) chunks were excavated near the middle of south wall 929. The poorly fired tiles near the rock and other tile is a greenish yellow.
A fairly complete sacrum was recovered from the east edge of the pit next to the center of wall 929 (dug in 1990 season). It may be a remnant of the burial not found in the excavation of a grave in the 1990 filed season. More human bone is coming up in the pit area than anywhere else.
At the completion of this context, a cut (985) was defined through the middle of the area, which is thought to encompass the west side of the area below this context. The pit obviously cut this mixed fill on the western side.
There appears to be a mix of well and poorly fired tiles in this fill.
