Stratum: | Soil includes fine rounded and subangular, spherical pebbles, medium and coarse subangular spherical and tabular pebbles, ceramic tile fragments, bone, pottery, and a few subangular cobbles.
Description: | Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark reddish black. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes: | This context is the same as 986 but is located between SW pier base 920 and SE pier 928. It was connected in the east with Context 986. It appears to be a leveling fill, as it was in 986. It may have supported marble flooring adjacent to the cosmati floor in the nave. Or, it may have supported part of the cosmati floor itself as we found multiple fragments of antico rosso from an opus sectile floor.
