Notebook:   1110
Context:   989
Date:   2016/05/31
Lot:   Lot 2016-059
Stratum:   Soil includes fine tabular and spherical, rounded and subangular pebbles, medium tabular, subangular and angular pebbles, ceramic tile fragments (medium and large), a few cobbles, spherical, subangular, and concrete chunks.
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is moderately sorted. It is silty clay.
Notes:   This is likely the fill of a grave as the cut associated with it is a long oval shape. The fill is overlaid by the mixed fill (984) in the mid-south aisle. The cut associated with that fill (985) may be part of the west, north, and east sides of this cut associated with this fill (989). It seems that the northern edge is not as well defined. There are some medium sized rocks around the border in the NE corner. The fill also included a number of large white concrete chunks and lime mortar, indicating that the cut went through a concrete surface. The fill has also yielded a fair number of disarticulated human bone elements including a skull fragment, distal humerus, femur shaft, vertebrae, and os coxa. Foot phalanges were found at the east end, possibly articulated with a skeleton. Flat lying ceramic tiles have been exposed in the west end (may be covering the cranium?) No, not enough tiles. There is some root activity in the fill. More of the foot that that the foot phalanges were articulated with was exposed and it appears that the foot is flexed with the toes up and the foot almost vertical.

In excavating near the flexed articulated foot (Context 991), a femur, not articulated and oriented in the opposite direction was found lying on top of a fibula articulated with the foot.
Coin 155 found in sieve.
Coin 156 found at N 1069.30, E 125.75, H84.95
There are some curved ceramic tile fragments in line/stacked on each other on the north west edge of the grave. They seem similar to Str. 960, a tile covering from Grave 2016-03. There were also medium sized rocks in the western end arranged in a semi circle where a head might be. An os coxa fragment was found beneath these rocks. A portion of a potentially articulated hand was excavated from the southwest edge. A manubrium fragment was found with it. Worked stone is appearing along the southest side and possibly another on northwest side under the curved tile fragments. Another os coxa found in SE corner. There is a tumble of broken tiles in the east end of the grave south of the articulated leg/foot (Context 991).
Coin 157 found in sieve.
A potential iron necklace made of small articulated iron balls (MF 2016 77) was found at the E end of the grave. It was below and south of the articulated leg (991). It was found among a bone jumble (Context 992) in the east end. The articulated leg and foot are Context 991. The jumble of tile is mixed in and on top of the jumble of bones. There is a fair amount of root activity within this fill - long white roots.

As we continue to excavate the fill for this grave (2016-07), a stone block lining is becoming visible. It appears to be somewhat similar to Str. 950 in grave 2016-03 directly across from this burial on the north side of the church.
Coin 159 found in sieve.
After fully revealing the bone jumble (992) and the primary inhumation (994), we took out most of the bones from the jumble including the two crania in the SE side. There were a couple of bones pressed against the E and W sides of the stone along the NW edge of the grave. In an attempt to clean the primary inhumation off in preparation for its removal, this NW stone was disturbed and fell onto the chest of the primary inhumation. There was minimal damage to the bones, but because the stone was knocked out of place, we removed it. The stone was wedge/triangular shaped in that the surface that we uncovered originally fomed the flat side of an inverted triangle. The bones next to it were up against the slanted sides of the triangle. One of the bones was a tibia on the west side oriented with the proximal end at the point of the triangle. The placement of this triangular stone in the grave is perplexing. It appeared to be parallel to two stones in line on the north edge of the burial.

During removal of Skeleton 994, more of the possible iron/metal necklace or other jewelry item (Nicol suggests belt) were found in the soil used to keep the feet of 994 from becoming disarticulated during the removal of the bone jumble (Skeleton 992). A small amount of it is still together in the soil of 989 and will be left for conservator (Nicol) to excavate. As Kostas was cleaning the cut of the grave (Context 993), bones from two other graves became apparent in the scarp. To the west, possible finger bones (later note 06/06 KES: these are feet bones) and to the south, a portion of the pine of a different individual at a much higher elevation than the primary burial in 2016-07. Prior to excavating grave 2016-07, we had identified the possibility of another grave being to its south and that is not confirmed by this spine. This "new"grave will be explored next week as well as the possibility of one to the west of 2016-07, which is still under a tile surface and no cut has yet bee identified for it. Further cleaning of the bottom has revealed that the grave goes further down as an intact spine can now be seen and the soil remains the same. This will be explored Monday since Nicol still will need time to deal with this iron object at the east end of the grave before we can proceed deeper. Coin 160 found in the sieve of soil from this area. Around 11:30 Nicol excavated the iron items at the east end, after which Kostas returned to cleaning the eastern edge of the cut. After removing c. 5cm of soil, Kostas encountered a skull tossed over a pair of articulated feet (Skeleton 996), [KES] which were removed on Friday. Beneath these feet and cranium, another articulated (right) foot was found. Unfortunately, it was taken out of situ before it could be recorded. It was placed back in its find spot for futher consideration on Monday.
2016/06/06 [KES]
As we further defined the articulated spine found at the bottom of Grave 2016-07, we discovered that it was associated with more articulated vetebrae to the north. The soil from around this spine was given a different context number (Context 997), although the soil was quite similar. It was determined that the articulated foot may belong with the articulated thorax and was thus included in that skeleton context (998).
