Title:   LID WITH RELIEF DECORATION

Description:   Broad, rounded resting surface and a straight, conical body curving up to a broad, flat, hollow cap. Heavy handle in form from on top of the cap has been roughly modelled into the form of a quadruped of which the nose and tail are missing.
Decoration:   The quadruped handle is decorated with deeply impressed holes. Plump petals arranged in four irregular horizontal rows extending the entire height of the body. Thick yellowish brown glaze covers entire exterior and the resting surface, on which it is markedly thicker and where drops have formed.
Material:   Medium hard clay. Red to reddish brown (Munsell 2.5 YR 5/4 to 5/6), core fired gray; edges fired red. White, black and gray inclusions. Granular, conchoidal, slightly hackly break with occasional laminar voids.
Munsell Color:   2.5 YR 5/4 to 5/6.
Condition:   Fragment. 10 frgts., preserving about 3/4 of lid including 3/4 of resting surface, body and the almost complete knob. Restored with plaster.
