Title:   YELLOW-GLAZED FRANKISH JUG

Description:   Jug with flat string-cut base from which body contracts, then flaring to ovoid with max. diam. below median, and curving up to cylindrical neck with trefoil lip. Vertical handle, oval in section, attached to max. diam. and neck. Double incised line just below lip.
Decoration:   White slip on almost all of exterior except for the base and for a height up to 0.06 on lower body. Thick dark yellow glaze, with patches of brown glaze, on upper body to max. diam., lip and handle. Smudges of glaze on lower body.
Material:   Fine, medium hard, light brown clay. 3% pale yellow (0.5-1.5 mm)angular, spherical;1% white (0.25-1.5 mm) angular, tabular; 1% black (0.25-1.5 mm) subrounded, spherical inclusions. Rare, regular smooth voids. Smooth, conchoidal break.
Munsell Color:   Between 7.5YR 7/3 (pink) and 6/4 (light brown)
Condition:   Complete profile. Seven joining frgts preserve complete base, almost complete body and one handle. One-eighth of rim preserved. Worn glaze in places. Glaze missing in an oval spot from touching another vase in the kiln?
