Description: | Whole leg and small part of body of 4-legged ritual vessel in black burnished ware. From small, sharply splayed toe, leg rises spreading broadly, 1/2 oval in section (with rear of leg flattened), to offsetting groove at articulation with body. The appearance of this example (shape, paint) is unusual for Corinth. | |
Decoration: | Inner face of body atop leg wiped and with very shallow depression hollowed out perpendicularly to plane of face of leg, with possible traces white paint. Outside, crusted red paint at articulation of black burnished leg and body and along sides of leg; at rear, wiped smooth and coated with ? crusted white paint, as also underside of belly. Front face of leg decorated with incised and white-filled pattern of St. Andrew's cross with arms cross-hatched. | |
Material: | Fine fabric, scattered inclusions, lightly micaceous, fired dull dirty gray at core, going to dull brick-red and black surface layers. | |
Condition: | Fragment. Single fragment, broken all around at top, leg intact except for 2 large chips. | |
