Title:   HEAD OF DEITY FROM ROMAN SIMA OF SOUTH STOA
Category:   Architecture
Category Code:   FS
Year:   2009
Object Number:   1
Description:   Figurine of female head in relief facing right with hair tied by fillet. Very similar to Roman sima relief perhaps from the Fountain House in the South Stoa (Corinth IV. I, pp. 123-124), but unclear which of the two types because hair knot is missing. Likely type two (Corinth IV.1, pl 40.1) since there is a circular break at the back of the neck consistent with the loss of a hair knot, the lines of the relief are not as crisp as those of type one and the ear is most similar to the type two variety. Part of almond-shaped eye is preserved, small ear surrounded by curled locks of hair. Similar locks frame forehead. Neck is bare. If part of Roman sima, the figure may be a divinity (AJA XXXVII, 1933, pp. 562-3; AJA XXXIX, 1935, pp. 58-59).
Material:   Terracotta - fine, very few inclusions (flecks of black and dark red)
Munsell Color:   5YR 7/3
Condition:   Missing parts. Terracotta head in relief with neck, ear, part of hairstyle tied with fillet, and part of eye preserved. Missing nose and chin, as well as part of the hairstyle. Surviving surfaces are chipped in places, rubbed smooth in others, but some contours remain.
