Description: | Bronze spatulate implement with thin shaft, circular in section, tapering to a sharp point at one end. At other end, shaft flattened into a small, round blade tipped at an oblique angle to shaft. Resembles Jackson's "ligula" (R. Jackson, "A Set of Roman Medical Instruments from Italy," Britannia 17 (1986), p. 128, #28, fig. 4) or Davidson's spatulate implements in Corinth XII, pp. 184-5, #1336-1347, esp. #1347. May have been used like an ear or unguent spoon or for medical purposes. | |
Decoration: | Pattern of two reels, round bead, two reels, and a flat bead, then section of incised linear decoration creating diamond patterns on shaft just below blade. Similar decoration to Corinth XII, p. 185, #1347. | |
