Description:   Mask, female face, Archaizing style: thick strands of tight spirally-curled ringlets, three strands falling to left of face, with hair ties at regular intervals; large almond-shaped eyes with raised outline, long nose with two deep lines at top on forehead, pierced mouth. Top of mantle on top surface above hair. Cf. terracotta masks for tragic pantomime, Agora VI 508, 516 (both 3rd AC) and tragic masks Agora VI 524 (3rd AC) and 528 (late 3rd to 4th AC); marble tragic mask in the Ashmolean (1st BC-1st AC).
Decoration:   Traces of white paint with black outline on left eye; black line of paint across forehead at hairline.
Material:   Coarse light brownish gray clay with frequent medium rounded black and white inclusions.
Munsell Color:   2.5Y 6/2 (light brownish gray)
Condition:   Fragment. Single frgt., preserving upper part of human face and part of hair, broken across left cheek. Part of upper edge of open mouth preserved. Surface worn.

Chronology:   Rough fabric is consistent with other figurines of the Roman period from Corinth, e.g. MF-84-47, MF-84-16, MF-83-59. Heavily rimmed eyes typical of Roman figurines, e.g. Corinth XII, 413, 443-446 (all 1st c. AC), 453 (3rd c. AC)
