Corinth Object: MF 2017 6
Collection:   Corinth
Type:   Object
Name:   MF 2017 6
Title:   BRONZE HANDLE
Category Code:   MF
Year:   2017
Object Number:   6
Description:   Bronze object (or possibly bifurcated probe, padlock, or key) with one rod-like extension and one spike, parallel, perhaps tines(?). Rod square in section at base but becomes circular in section soon after. Spike, much smaller than rod, square in section but tapers almost to flat point. Rod and spike, possibly for insertion into wooden object, attached via thin plaque soldered to top. Upper part with thick slightly oblong loop (Diam. 0.005-0.006 (inner), W. 0.04) on same half as spike; other end sloping down from loop and gently easing to point protruding at mid slope with vertical drop (H. 0.002-0.003) from point then widenin until end (W. 0.01) with concave edge, trapezoidal in section. Upper part with flat underside, top surface with slight center ridge throughout. Similar to miscellaneous objects MF-6865 (Davidson 1952, Corinth 12, cat. 2894) and MF-8195 (Davidson 1952, Corinth 12, cat. 2895); see also key MF-1977-4.
Decoration:   Incised decoration on top, two sides of object being almost identical: incised eye, frontal (one underside with more pronounced narrowing toward inner corner; other almond-shaped) with incised circle indicating pupil (or iris). Pupil of narrowed eye in center of eye toward but not touching upper edge, also possibly with gilding; pupil of almond-shaped eye located near outer corner and connecting to upper edge. Each side with second incised circle, identical size as pupil, located directly in line with spike but above loop. At trapezoidal projection past rod, both sides with small indentation across side and top surfaces create triangular void. Shape and decoration of upper part perhaps represents stylized human face, in profile, with eyes, frontal; point protruding at mid slope becomes nose, and triangular void becomes mouth?
Material:   Bronze. Gilding?
Condition:   Missing parts. Single frgt., preserving complete finial and spike, broken rod. Some corrosion on rod, spike, and upper part.
Dimensions Actual:   Diam. 0.005 (rod), Diam. 0.003 (spike)
