Title:   TERRACOTTA FIGURINE: HORSE

Description:   Terracotta handmade solid horse with saddle. One continuous back curve from the neck to tail. Narrow neck broadens at top for beginning of the head which slopes down at the forehead. A groove across the forehead and two small indentions are preserved on the top of the head (for poss. metal attachment). Triangular chest, forequarters round in section, thicker than the hindquarters which are rectangular in section. Back flattened smooth causing the belly to bow down like a swayback. Hindquarters extend downward in a upside down V. A short flattened tail is pinched onto the rear of the horse. Added clay on flanks forms a horizontal oval saddle. Similar to MF-1071 and KT28-70 (Corinth XV.2, p.167-171, 175 no.26 pl.39).
Decoration:   White and gray paint covered whole body.

Material:   Fine reddish yellow clay with frequent fine-large spherical rounded white, rare small tabular rounded mudstone, and frequent fine mica inclusions and few small tabular angular voids
Munsell Color:   Clay: 7.5YR 7/6 (reddish yellow), Paint: 7.5YR 6/1 (gray) and 7.5YR 8/1 (white)
Condition:   Fragment. Three joining fragments preserving head except for muzzle, neck, torso and tail, and saddle. Forequarters broken at junction with body, hindquarters broken above knees. Slip covers most of the figurine. Surface worn.

Chronology:   5th to late 4th c. B.C. stylistically (PQ, Class XXIII late group) or late 3rd to early 2nd c. B.C. based on C47-304 SAH Rhodian (VG #Co 235) or 240-217 B.C. based on an AR coin of Roman Republic found in well XVI.
