Description: | Standing draped female figure, c. life-size; weight on l. leg; r. leg bent and placed slightly back and to side; wears chiton, visible at neck and at ankles; chiton falls in crinkly folds to top of plinth, covering l. foot completely and all but toes of r. foot; wears sandal, visible on r. foot, with sole carved but no straps; Greek himation wrapped around body; r. arm bent in 90 degree angle at elbow and brought across body underneath himation, hand emerges from drapery at l. shoulder to hold edge of himation; l. arm bent slightly at elbow and down at l. side; l. arm also covered by himation except for tips of fingers; holds bunch of drapery; back of statue not carefully finished; pointing boss (?) visible on side of l. thigh; round plinth, closely following contours of statue. Head inserted separately, piece of neck still in head socket, carved from larger-crystalled, more luminous white marble than body; rasp marks on front drapery; skin surfaces carefully smoothed; drill work in drapery, especially chiton folds; flat chisel work on back; point on top of plinth. Statue copies well-known type, so-called Small Herculaneum Woman, used frequently for portraits in Roman period. | |
