Description:   Reading from negative of mould: Finial composed of a pair of tangent S-scrolls, larger at bottom, smaller at top; coil is broad, slightly convex in section, making 3 rotations in upper volutes to end without an eye. In angles between upper and lower volutes is a horizontal triangular petal. In the center between the S-scrolls is the impression of the top of head with deeply stippled and gouged short tufts of hair, broad forehead, inner corners of 2 eyes and top of eye sockets. The surface is modeled in fine clay 0.004 thick or less; the edges are unslipped, the back thinly washed with fine clay. In the lower break a horizontal "seam" apparent midway through thickness of piece where possibly thick layer of clay applied to segment pressed into mould; however, the possible joint is not visible in the upper break. Decoration:   Possible faint traces of red paint on coils of upper lt. volute.
Material:   Coarse clay, fired buff at surface, pink just below, yellow to pink core, with 10% fine black and red mudstone, rare medium mudstone.

Condition:   Fragment. Single frgt., broken bottom and top, preserving 2/3 of upper two volutes, top of lower volute, coil leading to lt. lower volute.
