"Corinth","1932/05/24","Corinth:Object:S 1534","","","","Nereid","S 1534","","","AKROTERION: DRAPED FEMALE","Object","Corinth:Image:bw  3766::/Corinth/Photos/negatives/3000-3999/3766_gp.jpg::1351::1800","Akroterion of draped female figure, under 2/3 life-size, probably a Nereid riding a dolphin; figure largely frontal, turned slightly to proper l., l. leg vertical and r. leg bent slightly back to proper r. side; drapery deeply cut in long folds and ridges between legs; cloth looks wind-blown, clinging to legs in front and billowing out to sides and back, giving effect of rapid motion; wears chiton, visible at feet; himation over top, with wider folds of cloth; part of dolphin visible from behind; tail turned up and body vertical, supporting female figure; beneath the dolphin in back and on top of plinth is a series of wavy horizontal chisel-cut ridges, representing the sea; drapery folds on back rendered simply, with shallow lines radiating from center; joined fragment preserves front of l. foot, wearing solid shoe or boot; much of surface sheered (probably from heat exposure); rasp marks visible on drapery; chisel work on top of plinth and back; point work on sides of plinth."

Wears polis crown with central gate, towers, coursed masonry with slit windows.  Hair parted in center, 2 rows of tight curls with drilled centers frame forehead to back of ears; single lock before each ear; behind lt. ear short locks in low relief without drill. Top of head worked with point. Oval face with broad forehead, narrow chin. Sharp brow ridges and upper lids, lightly incised iris. Drilled nostrils. Small mouth open slightly, showing tongue; small drill hole at lt. corner. Face worked smoothly but not polished.Faint rasping on neck"
